Introduction

The advanced neonatal nurse practitioner has become an essential role within the neonatal environment that is now widely used in all levels of neonatal units across the UK (NHS Improvement, 2018). The Bliss Report (Davey, 2015) highlighted that neonatal services in the UK are experiencing serious strain given a shortage in speciality trained medical staff. The work of advanced neonatal nurse practitioners within neonatal units helps to bridge this gap to allow for a constant specialist presence and level of expertise to deliver appropriate neonatal care.

The role of an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner can vary depending on individual trust requirements and the care level of the neonatal unit (Jones and Webster, 2019). However, all advanced practitioners require a specialist level of knowledge, skills and clinical experience within their area (Royal College of Nursing, 2023).
