Introduction

Nursing education plays a focal role in shaping the healthcare environment by educating the next generation of proficient and compassionate nurses. The Royal College of Nursing (2024) highlights that all registered nurses must select one of four specialisms during their nursing degree:

  1. adult nursing
  2. children's nursing
  3. mental health nursing
  4. learning disability nursing

This choice does not rigidly dictate one’s career path, as nurses have the flexibility to transition between specialisms even after graduation.
